The Head Teacher, Governors, students, parents and the whole school community are pleased with the judgements made by the Ofsted team that recently visited Breeze Hill.

“This is a good and improving school which has outstanding links with the local and wider community for the benefit of the young people in its care."

These were the words of the lead inspector in summarizing the overall effectiveness of the school. Teachers were praised for the increased amount of outstanding teaching witnessed by the inspection team.  Increased levels of attendance since the last inspection were put down to the curriculum and the level of support given to all students.

“Our teachers and teaching assistants are kind, look after us and help us to learn,” was a comment from a student interviewed by inspectors.

English, science, graphics and Urdu were praised as subjects in which students did particularly well – one student in last summer’s Urdu GCSE got the fifth highest mark in the whole country. Inspectors agreed with the school’s own evaluation that standards reached in mathematics needed to improve.

Humanities College status was seen as already having a major impact on raising the self-esteem and aspirations of students as well as promoting racial harmony through drama and an increased range of links and partnerships with the world outside Breeze Hill.

Commenting on Leadership and Management the inspectors said, “The vision and skilful management of the Head Teacher, ably supported by the talented senior team, continues to drive improvements in all aspects of the school’s work.”

Parents’ responses to the Ofsted questionnaire included these words, “Our children get lots of support in school in a safe and well-managed environment.”  Exclusions are low compared to most schools and inspectors praised the support given to young people in danger of underachievement.

Areas for improvement were identified, including an increase in student self-discipline and a greater consistency in marking and academic guidance across all subjects. Inspectors also stressed the outstanding teaching in areas like English and drama that was encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning. The active role of the Student Council and the opportunities for children across the ability range to take responsibility by helping younger students or new arrivals from abroad were praised.

Finally, the letter sent to all students by the leader of the inspection team left them in little doubt:

“Breeze Hill is a good school and you are right to be proud of it!”
